Friday Cruise Nights: classic, custom and collectable cars
The great year-round weather draws many classic and custom car lovers to the Sunshine State. Some car hobbyists love to build and restore, others love to tinker and refine. Due to the popularity of the hobby in South Florida, there are several places that offer cruise nights, where owners of classic, custom, collectable and cool cars can show off their wheels. About West Palm Beach, Florida
Although it doesn’t have the same glamorous reputation as Palm Beach on the ocean, West Palm Beach still has a lot to offer visitors. Located on the west side of Lake Worth, it’s the county seat for Palm Beach County and is right on the Intracoastal Waterway. The downtown district has been revitalized with new government buildings and hotels, a waterfront amphitheatre, and a convention center. (Palm Beach is on the east side of Lake Worth on a barrier island via the Flagler Memorial Bridge or Royal Palm Way.)
Comfortable accommodations include Courtyard by Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Fairmont Inn & Suites, 1923 Grandview Gardens Bed & Breakfast, Hilton Hotel, historic landmark Hotel Biba, Hibiscus House Bed & Breakfast, La Quinta, and Park View Motor Lodge. Many are near the Palm Beach International Airport and Interstate 95.
Popular restaurants, some with nightly entertainment, include the Blue Martini, Morton’s the Steakhouse, Paddock Restaurant at the Palm Beach Kennel Club, five-star Palm Beach Yacht Club, Raindancer, Bonefish Creek Restaurant, and Tsunami. The 72-acre City Place entertainment-retail-residential complex in the downtown district features 20 dining options in addition to shopping and entertainment.
Science, wildlife and nature attractions include the Okeeheelee Nature Center, Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park, Grassy Waters Preserve, Diva Duck Ride, and the South Florida Science Museum & Planetarium. From March to October, the Rapids Water Park is the place to stay cool. For racing fans, there’s Moroso Motorsports Park.
Well-attended events are Moonfest, Kaleidoscope, International Tennis Championship, Medieval Faire, Irish Fest, Clematis by Night, Palm Beach Boat Show, Sunday at the Meyer, and Marathon of the Palm Beaches, as well as the seasonal Greenmarket noted for its agricultural produce and colorful flower market.
Nearby spectator attractions include the Palm Beach Kennel Club, and the Roger Dean Dean Stadium in Jupiter for Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals spring training for sports buffs.
A haven for golfers, public and semi-private courses include Belle Glade Municipal Golf Course, Emerald Dunes Golf Course, PGA National Golf Club, and West Palm Beach Golf Course.
